UAE residents can apply for a Switzerland (Schengen) visa one of two ways — through VFS Global, or directly at the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi.
Here’s which route applies to you, how to book, and what it costs.
Who Needs a Visa
If you hold a UAE passport, you do not need a visa for short stays. Emirati nationals can enter Switzerland and the wider Schengen area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, business, or family visits.
Most UAE residents on other passports — Indian, Pakistani, Egyptian, Filipino, and many more — do need a Schengen visa before travelling.
Switzerland is part of the Schengen zone, so the same visa lets you travel on to neighbouring countries during your trip. You can plan onward flights to Zurich or Geneva and beyond.
How to Apply
Switzerland uses VFS Global to collect most visa applications in the UAE. But some applicants must or can apply through the embassy.
An appointment is mandatory on either route. Without one, neither VFS Global nor the Embassy’s visa section will accept your application.
Through VFS Global
This is the route for short-stay Schengen visas (up to 90 days) — tourism, business, or visiting family and friends. VFS Global lists two Switzerland centres in the UAE:
- Abu Dhabi centre: Visa Application Centre in Abu Dhabi.
- Dubai centre: Visa Application Centre in Dubai.
You register, book, and pay through the official VFS Global Switzerland portal for the UAE, then attend in person to submit documents and give biometrics.
Directly at the Embassy
This is the government channel. The Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi is the deciding authority for the UAE and handles direct national-visa submissions. You apply here directly in two cases:
- Long-stay national visas (more than 90 days) — study, employment, retirement, or family reunion. These must be submitted in person at the Embassy’s visa section in Abu Dhabi.
- Family members of a Swiss, EU, or EFTA citizen — you are entitled to apply directly at the Embassy’s visa section in Abu Dhabi, and this route is usually free of charge.
An appointment with the visa section must be booked in advance, the same as the VFS route.
How to Book Your Appointment
For the VFS Global route, the appointment slot itself is free. Follow this order:
- Register an account on the VFS Global Switzerland-UAE website and start a new application.
- Select your visa type — tourism, business, or visiting family/friends.
- Choose your centre (Abu Dhabi or Dubai) and pick an available date and time.
- Attend in person to submit documents and give biometrics (fingerprints and a photo).
For the Embassy route, request an appointment with the visa section in Abu Dhabi before submitting. Apply up to six months before travel, and no later than 15 days before departure. First-time Schengen applicants aged 12 and over give biometrics in person; fingerprints collected within the last 59 months are generally reused.
Required Documents
Bring originals and copies. Missing paperwork is the most common reason appointments are wasted, so check the list against your visa type before you go.
- Passport: valid at least three months beyond your departure from Schengen, issued within the last 10 years, with two blank pages.
- Application form: the Schengen form, completed and signed.
- Photo: one recent colour photo on a white background, meeting ICAO standards, taken within six months.
- UAE residence visa: valid for another three months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area.
- Travel insurance: medical cover of at least €30,000 across the whole Schengen area.
- Return flights: a confirmed round-trip booking.
- Accommodation: hotel bookings or an invitation letter from your host.
- Financial proof: personal bank statements (usually the last three to six months) and a salary certificate or trade licence.
For accommodation proof, confirmed hotels in Switzerland covering your full stay are accepted. Many travellers fly with Swiss International Air Lines, though any confirmed booking works.
Fees and Processing Time
The Schengen visa fee is set by the Swiss authorities and is the same on both routes. VFS Global adds a separate service charge per application, collected locally in dirhams. The Embassy route does not carry this VFS charge.

Fees are paid in dirhams and the amount shifts with the exchange rate. Family members of Swiss, EU, or EFTA citizens are generally exempt from the visa fee. All fees are otherwise non-refundable, even if your visa is refused.
Standard processing is 15 calendar days from when the Embassy receives your file. This period may be extended in individual cases, and some files forwarded to the authorities in Switzerland can take up to 12 weeks, so apply well ahead of your trip.

Should I apply through VFS Global or the Embassy?
For a short-stay tourist, business, or visit visa, use VFS Global. The Embassy handles long-stay national visas directly, and family members of Swiss/EU/EFTA citizens may apply there too.
Can I apply for Switzerland through another country’s visa centre?
No. You must apply to the country that is your main destination. If Switzerland is where you’ll spend the most time, you apply through its centre, not a different Schengen country’s.
How early can I book my appointment?
You can apply up to six months before your intended travel date, and no later than 15 days before you depart. On the VFS route, booking the appointment slot is free.
Is the visa fee refunded if I’m rejected?
No. The visa fee and any VFS service charge are non-refundable regardless of the outcome, so make sure your documents are complete before you apply.
