Thailand has reopened its borders to fully vaccinated travellers from all over the world and has also scrapped the pre-departure RT-PCR test requirement for vaccinated travellers. Understandably, many travellers are looking to reacquaint themselves with Thailand’s extraordinary beauty and cultural uniqueness.

Here’s all you need to know about Thailand reopening; its entry requirements, list of allowed countries, and vaccination and quarantine requirements.

What is the current situation like in Thailand?

As of 1 July 2022, the official tally has reported a total of 4.5 million confirmed cases in Thailand, where the population is more than 69.8 million. With 4.4 million cases of recovery, the recovery rate in Thailand is also upto the mark.

At present, with the assumption that every person needs 2 doses, Thailand’s vaccination rate is at about 99.8% per cent of the total population. 

 

Are there airlines flying to Thailand now?

A search through Wego shows that there are several international flight schedules departing to Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Ko Samui from countries the likes as England, France, Germany, The UAE, Australia, South Korea, Singapore, and numerous others.

Among the more notable airlines are Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Emirates Airlines, Etihad Airways, and Thai Airways.

Am I allowed to visit Thailand now?

Yes. Thailand has now scrapped its pre-departure RT-PCR testing requirement for vaccinated international travellers arriving in Thailand. International arrivals to Thailand are NO longer be required to register themselves for the Thailand pass and US$10,000 health insurance, thus welcoming all travellers with proof of either a certificate of vaccination or a pre-arrival negative RT-PCR or professional ATK (Antigen Test Kit) test result.

Furthermore:

  • Everyone 18 years of age and older must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 with an approved vaccine at least 14 days before travelling to Thailand.
  • Travellers 5-17 years of age travelling to Thailand unaccompanied must get vaccinated with at least 1 dose of an approved vaccine at least 14 days before travelling to Thailand. Those travelling with parents are exempt from this requirement.

Vaccinated travellers

Pre-arrival requirements

Vaccinated travellers must have the following documents for entering Thailand:

  • A valid passport, or a border pass for arrivals via border checkpoints.
  • A Certificate of COVID-19 Vaccination

On-arrival requirements

Upon arriving in Thailand, all travellers must undergo entry screening including body temperature check, and present the required documents to the Immigration/Health Control officer to carry out the checks.

The vaccinated travellers will then be allowed entry and are free to go anywhere in the kingdom.

Unvaccinated travellers

Pre-arrival requirements

Unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated travellers must have the following documents for entering Thailand:

  • A valid passport, or a border pass for arrivals via border checkpoints.

On-arrival requirements

After the health screening, unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travellers who have proof of a negative result from an RT-PCR test or professional ATK within 72 hours of travel will be allowed entry and are free to go anywhere in the kingdom.

However, unvaccinated/not fully vaccinated travellers without a negative test result within 72 hours of travel are required to follow the public health instructions and guidelines as deemed appropriate by the Health Control officer at the point of arrival. All expenses incurred will be the responsibility of the travellers.

COVID recovered travellers

  • Those previously infected with COVID-19 are considered fully vaccinated if they have received a single dose of COVID-19 vaccine at any time after their recovery. They are required to submit proof or medical record of COVID-19 recovery alongside the single-dose vaccination certificate.
  • Those fully vaccinated before contracting COVID-19 are still considered to be fully vaccinated.
  • Those recovered from COVID-19 within 3 months before travelling to Thailand must present a valid medical certificate certifying the full recovery (within 3 months but no less than 14 days before travelling) or that they are asymptomatic in case the COVID-19 RT-PCR – or professional ATK – test shows a positive result.

Vaccination criteria

Vaccines currently approved in Thailand for travel are:

  1. CoronaVac (Sinovac) – 2 doses needed / 2nd dose after 2-4 weeks;
  2. AstraZeneca (Vaxzevria, Covishield) – 2 doses needed / 2nd dose after 4-12 weeks;
  3. Pfizer-BioNTech (Comirnaty, Tozinameran (INN)) – 2 doses needed / 2nd dose after 3 week;
  4. Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) – 1 dose needed;
  5. Moderna (Spikevax) – 2 doses needed / 2nd dose after 4 weeks);
  6. COVILO (Sinopharm, Hayat-Vax) – 2 doses needed / 2nd dose after 3-4 weeks);
  7. Sputnik V – 2 doses needed / 2nd dose after 3 weeks);
  8. Covaxin – 2 doses needed / 2nd dose after 4 weeks;
  9. Novavax (Nuvaxovid) / Covovax – 2 doses needed / 2nd dose after 3 weeks);
  10. Medigen – 2 doses needed / 2nd dose after 4 weeks;
  11. TURKOVAC / ERUCOV-VAC– 2 doses needed / 2nd dose after 4 weeks;
  12. Sputnik Light – 1 dose needed;
  13. CansinoBio (Ad5-nCov / Convidecia) – 1 dose needed.

Travellers are considered fully vaccinated if:

  • They get their second dose of a 2-dose vaccine no less than 14 days before their travel date to Thailand.
  • They get a single-dose vaccine no less than 14 days before their travel date to Thailand.
  • In case of mix-and-match vaccines, travellers should get their second dose of a different vaccine within the recommended interval of the first vaccine no less than 14 days before their travel date to Thailand.

The travellers’ certificate of COVID-19 vaccination should contain the following details:

  • Given name and last name;
  • Date of Birth;
  • Nationality;
  • Passport or Identification No.;
  • Name of the COVID-19 vaccine;
  • Vaccination dates;
  • Vaccine manufacturer and lot/batch number;
  • Authorised organisation in the country of origin

What do I need to prepare if I need to visit Thailand now?

General tourists are not required to apply for a Thai visa. Visitors from countries under the visa exemption list are not required to obtain a Thai visa in order to travel to Thailand for tourism purposes.

The Thai Immigration Bureau will allow foreigners to stay in Thailand for 30 days. Tourists will have the option to apply for 30 days visa extension at any local immigration office in Thailand. The visa extension due to COVID-19 is valid for 60 days.

 

Is it safe to travel to Thailand?

Yes, it is. With the world slowly coming back to normalcy, and following a noticeable dip in the number of Covid-19, Thailand has also started taking its step toward normalcy. The country has now scrapped the pre-arrival RT-PCR test requirement.

However, it is still important to follow all the Covid-19 protocols and abide by all the precautionary guidelines after arriving in the country.
