Transiting Through Bangkok During the Middle East Crisis: What You Need to Know

Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport remains one of the most practical transit alternatives for travellers rerouted by the Middle East airspace closures.

Here is why it works, which airlines fly through, the transit visa rules, and what to expect on a layover.

Why Bangkok Is a Strong Transit Alternative Right Now

Bangkok sits well outside the conflict-affected airspace, making it a natural rerouting point for airlines that once relied on Gulf corridors between Europe and Asia.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand has confirmed that Thai airspace remains fully open and unaffected by the closures across the Middle East.

Suvarnabhumi is well-placed to absorb the extra traffic:

It handles around 67 million passengers a year, with the Midfield Satellite 1 (SAT-1) terminal adding capacity since late 2023.
A third runway, open since November 2024, has expanded how many flights the airport can handle each hour.
Multilingual information zones, extra seating, drinking water, and comfort measures have been set up for rerouted travellers.

Airlines and Routes Available Through Bangkok

Bangkok offers scheduled European connections, including British Airways’ London Gatwick service and Thai Airways’ Amsterdam service.

British Airways has made Bangkok a year-round destination, flying from London Gatwick three times weekly in summer 2026 and six times weekly in winter — an upgrade from its previous winter-only schedule.

Thai Airways publishes daily nonstop service on the Bangkok–Amsterdam route, TG936/937. The published departure times are 05:35 from Bangkok and 14:15 from Amsterdam, local time. Thai Airways is offering TG936 for September 2026 travel.

Norse Atlantic’s Manchester–Bangkok route is seasonal, not year-round: Manchester Airport announces four weekly flights from 5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027.

EASA’s current Gulf advisory recommends avoiding specified overwater airspace, with an exception for necessary arrivals and departures at airports in the affected Persian Gulf flight-information regions and caution over land. Transit Visa Rules: Who Needs One and Who Doesn’t

Most nationalities can transit through Bangkok without a visa if the layover is under 12 hours and you stay in the international transit area at Suvarnabhumi. This is Thailand’s Transit Without Visa (TWOV) provision.

If you plan to leave the airport, or if your connection requires you to collect and re-check your bags, you will pass through Thai immigration.

In that case, until 14 September 2026, nationals of 93 countries and territories are eligible for visa-free entry to Thailand for up to 60 days. From 15 September 2026, the general exemption changes to up to 30 days for 60 eligible countries and territories; separate bilateral arrangements may apply. Thailand offers visa on arrival at 2,000 THB (about USD 55), payable in cash at the airport for a 15-day stay, only to eligible nationalities. The eligible list can change, so check the visa information page before you travel.

Key points to note:

Self-transfer passengers (collecting and re-checking bags between separate bookings) must clear immigration and need visa-free eligibility, eligibility for a visa on arrival, or a visa obtained in advance.
Fly-through passengers with bags checked to their final destination can stay airside without passing immigration.
Pakistani ordinary passport holders need a visa in advance if entering Thailand or transiting for more than 12 hours. Eligibility for a shorter airside connection must be confirmed for the specific ticket before booking.
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is required if you pass through immigration but not for airside transit — complete it free at tdac.immigration.go.th.

The Royal Thai Embassy’s current guidance requires at least six months’ passport validity for visa-on-arrival applications; visa-exempt travellers should also have at least six months.

What to Expect During a Bangkok Layover

Suvarnabhumi has extensive facilities for transit passengers, whether you are airside for a few hours or clearing immigration for a longer stopover.

Inside security (airside):

Miracle Transit Hotel — on the 3rd floor of Concourse A in International Departures, with day-use rooms for 4–12 hour stays, plus a spa, sauna, and free WiFi.
Coral Lounges (Concourse D) and Miracle Lounges (SAT-1) — both pay-per-use, with shower facilities.
Free unlimited WiFi throughout the terminal, plus duty-free shopping and multiple food courts.

Outside security (landside):

Boxtel — soundproof single-traveller sleep pods in the basement, good for short rests.
Avagard Capsule Hotel — sleep pods with full-sized beds, WiFi, USB charging, and air conditioning.
Hyatt Regency Bangkok Suvarnabhumi — a full-service hotel connected to the terminal by an underground walkway (about a 10-minute walk), with rooms from around USD 150 a night.
