Seoul’s Incheon has become a key alternative transit hub as Gulf airspace disruptions reroute long-haul flights.

Do you need a visa or K-ETA to transit through Incheon?

The key rules in short:

Airside transit (no exit): No visa, no K-ETA, no e-Arrival Card. Just your passport and onward boarding pass.
Short layover under 24 hours with exit: No visa for eligible nationalities under Korea’s transit-without-visa rules, and no K-ETA if your country is on the exemption list.
Longer layover or Korea as a destination: Check whether you need a K-ETA or visa at the official K-ETA portal, and submit the e-Arrival Card unless exempt.

Citizens of eligible countries and territories — including the United States, the UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Japan, and most EU states — are temporarily exempt from the K-ETA requirement.

This K-ETA exemption has been extended through 31 December 2026. The current exemption expires on that date unless extended.

Since 1 January 2026, South Korea has also required most foreign nationals to submit a digital e-Arrival Card before entry. K-ETA holders are fully exempt from the e-Arrival Card. Travellers without a valid K-ETA who are not otherwise exempt should submit the free e-Arrival Card within three days before arrival.

How the Middle East crisis has reshaped Korea–Gulf flights

The crisis forced Korean carriers to suspend or trim their Middle East schedules, and recovery has been uneven.

Korean Air continues to suspend its Dubai route (KE951/KE952). Its current notice gives no confirmed restart date; resumption depends on airport conditions and demand.
Other carriers publish Korea–Gulf services. Emirates has a Wego timetable listing EK323 daily at 23:55 through 18 October, plus EK325 at 22:45 on Mondays and Fridays through 13 September, local departure times; this does not confirm seats on a specific date. Your booking status: If you’re on a Korean Air Incheon–Dubai ticket for the coming weeks, check the Korean Air suspension notice for any change to the suspension.

Incheon’s free Transit Tour

If your layover in Seoul is long enough to leave the airport, Incheon runs a free Transit Tour program that lets eligible passengers visit Seoul without a regular visa.

The tour is open to passengers with a layover of 24 hours or less, with options ranging from about one hour to five hours.

Eligibility covers three main groups, according to Incheon International Airport Corporation:

Passengers from visa-free countries (a K-ETA is required unless they qualify for an exemption).
Passengers holding a valid visa or permanent residency for the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or 32 listed European countries who are transiting to or from those destinations.
General foreign transit passengers who meet the program’s conditions.

Tours cover popular sights like Gyeongbokgung Palace, traditional Korean villages, temples and duty-free shopping districts, and are run by guides licensed by the Korean tourism authorities.

The tours themselves are free of charge, though you pay for any meals and personal shopping along the way.

To join, head to the Transit Tour Registration Desk on the 1st floor of Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 at least 30 minutes before the tour’s scheduled start time. You can reserve online or sign up on arrival, subject to availability.

One important restriction: Korea’s Ministry of Justice does not allow two entries during a single visit. Do not plan to clear immigration twice during the same airport visit to join separate tours.

Confirm your itinerary within 24 hours of departure, especially for bookings routed via Dubai or other affected Gulf hubs.
