United Airlines fares right now
Wego’s differentiator is its own live price data, drawn from real searches on the platform. The fares below are cheapest return economy fares for itineraries actually operated by United, with codeshares on partner metal excluded, for departures from Chicago O’Hare on 23 September 2026 returning 30 September 2026, sampled 12 August 2026 in USD.
Chicago is one of United’s largest hubs and the origin sampled here. United also operates large hubs at Newark, Houston, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington Dulles, and a search from any of those will return different fares.
Three of these fares are nonstop both ways: New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo. The rest carry a single stop, with Cancun routing via Denver on the outbound and Hong Kong via Los Angeles.
Fares move by the hour, so treat this as a dated snapshot and check current prices on Wego before you book.
Baggage allowance and fees
United raised checked bag fees by 10 dollars for tickets bought on or after 3 April 2026, and the domestic figures below reflect the current rates.
Basic Economy loses the free first international bag on some markets, so check the fare rules before you fly. Premium Economy and above generally get two free bags across the network.
Bring a full-size carry-on to the gate on a domestic Basic Economy fare and it is charged at the applicable checked-bag fee, currently $35 to $75 depending on when you pay, plus a $25 gate-handling charge. Elite status, a qualifying United credit card or an international route all remove that charge.
Fees change with fuel costs and season, so confirm on United’s own baggage page before you pack.
Fleet and aircraft
United’s mainline fleet passed 1,100 aircraft in 2026, the largest mainline operation of any single airline in the world.
- Narrowbody is split between the Boeing 737 family and the Airbus A320 family, including the new A321XLR.
- Widebody long-haul is Boeing-only, built on the 767, 777 and 787 Dreamliner.
Keep two things separate when you read fleet numbers in the press. Aircraft delivered and flying is a different figure from aircraft on order, and United holds a very large outstanding order book with both Boeing and Airbus.
Mainline aircraft flown by United itself is also a different fleet from United Express, flown under contract by SkyWest, Mesa and Republic. A route or seat count quoted for “United” may mean either, so check which before comparing it to another carrier.
Hubs and network
United operates seven large connecting hubs: Chicago O’Hare, Newark, Houston Intercontinental, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington Dulles, the last of which is now mid-way through a decade-long redevelopment.
Each hub anchors a different mix of domestic and international flying, from Newark’s transatlantic depth to the role Houston and Denver play feeding Latin America and the US interior.

Cabins and onboard product
United sells four cabins on most long-haul aircraft: Basic Economy, Economy, Premium Plus and Polaris business class.
Polaris is a fully lie-flat, forward-facing suite in a 1-2-1 layout on widebody aircraft, with premium bedding, an amenity kit and multi-course dining. Since April 2026 it sells in three fare tiers, Base, Standard and Flexible, and only Standard and Flexible include Polaris Lounge access and two free checked bags.
That change matters at booking: a Polaris fare no longer guarantees the lounge visit it used to. On the new A321XLR, United is also adding a single Economy Plus row per aircraft with the middle seat replaced by a shared console table.
MileagePlus loyalty programme
MileagePlus is United’s frequent flyer programme and the basis of its Star Alliance partnerships. Elite status runs four tiers for 2026:
- Premier Silver and Premier Gold, the entry tiers, adding free checked bags and Economy Plus access.
- Premier Platinum, adding higher upgrade priority.
- Premier 1K, the top published tier, adding systemwide upgrades.
Status is earned through Premier Qualifying Points, roughly one point per dollar of qualifying fare spend, combined with Premier Qualifying Flights, or through points alone at a higher threshold. Every tier needs at least four paid United or United Express segments a year.

Check-in, boarding and seat selection
Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure. The domestic airport check-in cutoff is 45 minutes before departure, with international cutoffs typically one hour before, though some airports set an earlier limit.
Arrive with two hours of buffer domestically and three internationally. Boarding runs through numbered and named groups, with pre-boarding covering passengers with disabilities, unaccompanied minors, active-duty military, families with young children and the airline’s Premier 1K and Global Services members.
Group 1 then covers Polaris, First Class, Premier Platinum and Gold, followed by Economy groups by fare and status. Seat selection is free at booking for most fares, while Basic Economy assigns a seat at check-in with no choice.
Contact, changes and cancellations
Any United fare, including Basic Economy, can be cancelled or changed free of charge within 24 hours of booking, provided the flight was booked at least seven days before departure.
Outside that window, standard Economy and above tickets carry no change fee, only a fare difference if you move to a pricier flight. Basic Economy remains non-changeable after the 24-hour window.
Same-day changes cost $75 for a confirmed new flight or $25 for standby, both waived for Premier elite members. For anything self-service cannot fix, United’s contact centre and live chat are listed on its official contact page.

Is United Express the same airline as United Airlines?
No. United Express is regional flying operated under contract by SkyWest, Mesa and Republic on United’s behalf, using United’s branding and booking system but different aircraft and crews from mainline United. Fleet and route figures for “United” can mean mainline only or mainline plus Express.
What is United Polaris?
Polaris is United’s long-haul business class: a fully lie-flat seat in a 1-2-1 layout with direct aisle access, plus premium bedding, amenity kits and multi-course dining. Since April 2026 it sells in three tiers, and only the Standard and Flexible tiers include Polaris Lounge access.
How much does a checked bag cost on United?
