ETA or Standard Visitor visa: which one applies to you
Your nationality decides the route. The official UK government checker confirms whether you need an ETA, a visa, or neither.
Travellers from the following countries can use the cheaper, faster ETA:
- Gulf and Middle East: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Israel are all on the ETA-eligible list.
- Asia-Pacific: Malaysia, Maldives, Singapore, Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea are also eligible.
Travellers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Egypt are not on the ETA list.
According to the UK Visas and Immigration list, these nationals must apply for a Standard Visitor visa instead.
The lists change, so check your own passport against the official tool before you book anything.
If you can use the UK ETA
The ETA is the simpler and cheaper option, and it covers attending Wimbledon as a spectator. It costs £20 and lets you visit the UK for up to 6 months at a time.
An ETA is linked to your passport and allows multiple visits. It stays valid for up to 2 years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
To apply, you’ll need:
- Passport: the one you’ll travel on — the ETA is digitally linked to it.
- A phone or computer: apply through the official “UK ETA” app or the GOV.UK website.
- A photo and payment card: you upload a photo and pay the £20 fee online.
Most decisions arrive within three working days, but the Home Office advises applying at least three working days before you travel.
Apply as soon as your trip is confirmed to avoid any last-minute boarding problems.
Since 25 February 2026, ETA enforcement is fully in force. Airlines will deny boarding to eligible nationals who don’t hold a valid ETA, so don’t leave it to the airport.
If you need a Standard Visitor visa
The Standard Visitor visa is the route for nationals who can’t use an ETA, and it also covers attending Wimbledon as a spectator.
It costs £135 for a stay of up to 6 months.
You must apply online before you travel, and the earliest you can apply is 3 months before your trip. Build in time for a visa application centre appointment to give your biometrics.
To meet the eligibility requirements, you must show that you:
- Will leave the UK at the end of your visit.
- Can support yourself and any dependants during the trip, or have funding from someone else.
- Can pay for your return or onward journey.
- Won’t make the UK your main home through frequent or successive visits.
If you visit the UK often, a long-term Standard Visitor visa may be better value. These cost £506 for 2 years, £903 for 5 years and £1,128 for 10 years as of April 2026.
What you can and can’t do at Wimbledon on either document
Both the ETA and the Standard Visitor visa let you attend Wimbledon as a spectator with no extra permission needed.
Watching matches falls under tourism, which is a permitted activity on both routes.
You can also sightsee, visit family or friends, and travel elsewhere in the UK during the same trip. Both documents allow stays of up to 6 months.
What neither document allows is work. You cannot take paid or unpaid work for a UK company, so working a hospitality shift or any paid role at the championships is not permitted on a visitor route.
Professional and amateur players competing in a tournament have their own rules. If you’re coming to play rather than watch, check the sporting-activity guidance before relying on a visitor route.
Getting to Wimbledon: flights and where to stay
Wimbledon sits in southwest London, easily reached from all the city’s main airports. Most Gulf and South Asian travellers fly into London Heathrow or London Gatwick.
Direct routes to London are served by several regional carriers:
- From the Gulf: Emirates from Dubai, Qatar Airways from Doha, and Etihad from Abu Dhabi.
- From Saudi Arabia: Saudia from Jeddah and Riyadh.
- From South Asia: Air India from Delhi and Mumbai.
