The mandate comes from the Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act. The government’s amended broadcast list, notified 9 May 2026, designates these matches as events of national importance.
The matches confirmed as free in India are:
- The opening match — Mexico v South Africa, around 12:30 AM IST on 12 June
- All quarter-finals
- Both semi-finals
- The final — 20 July IST (19 July local time)
That’s roughly eight marquee fixtures. The rest of the 104 matches are not free-to-air.
