About King Charles III’s coronation

A coronation is a symbolic religious ceremony in which the crown is physically placed on a monarch’s head.

After the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, her son, King Charles III, became the heir to the British throne according to the line of succession. The coronation ceremony is a formal way of marking his role as the head of the Church of England and the transfer of his title and powers.

During the ceremony, the King will swear an oath to uphold the law and the Church of England and will be anointed with special oil on his hands, chest, and head. He will also receive various regalia, such as a ring, a sceptre, and a sword. The ceremony will be followed by a procession to Buckingham Palace and a balcony appearance by the King and Queen Consort and other members of the royal family.

Prince William and his family, Prince Edward and his family, Princess Anne and her family, as well as Prince Harry and Prince Andrew, will attend King Charles III’s coronation. Several notable political figures from around the world, including Jill Biden, Boris Johnson, and Keir Starmer, will also be in attendance.

When and where will King Charles III’s coronation take place?

King Charles III and Camilla will be crowned as King and Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Westminster Abbey. The ceremony will begin at 11:00 AM British Standard Time (2:00 PM Gulf Standard Time) and is expected to last approximately three hours.

In addition to the coronation ceremony, there will be a concert on Sunday, May 7, 2023, on the grounds of Windsor Castle in Berkshire. The concert is set to feature world-famous entertainers such as Bette Midler, Lionel Richie, Gary Barlow, and Sir Paul McCartney.
