First Things First: Your Immediate Checklist
Before you contact anyone, save these on your phone. Screenshots are fine if your connection is weak.
- Your passport photo page
- Your booking confirmation or e-ticket
- Your visa details or entry stamp, plus your visa expiry date
- Proof of disruption, such as a cancellation email, app alert, SMS, or photo of the departures board
- Your travel insurance policy number and 24/7 hotline, if you have cover
- A working Saudi mobile number or reachable WhatsApp number
You will be asked for some combination of these by the airline, airport staff, GACA, immigration authorities, your embassy, or your insurer.

The Airline: Primary Authority
If a flight is cancelled, rerouted, or heavily delayed, the airline is the main decision-maker. Contact it first through the app, website, phone number on your ticket, airport counter, or booking agent.

- Ask whether your flight is still operating and from which terminal.
- Ask for rebooking on the next available flight, including partner or alliance options if available.
- Ask for written confirmation of the cancellation, delay, or rerouting.
- Ask what care applies while you wait, including refreshments, meals, hotel accommodation, and transport.
- If the airline asks you to accept a refund or alternative routing, ask what rights you give up by accepting it.

Airports cannot rebook your ticket, but they can help with terminal navigation, flight-status checks, lost baggage, emergency support, and directing you to the right airline or government desk.

Saudi airports advise passengers to check flight status and contact their airline before heading to the terminal, as some flights may be delayed, rescheduled, or cancelled.
GACA: For Passenger Rights and Complaints
The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) is the Saudi regulator for airline passenger-rights complaints. Use it if the airline does not respond or if you disagree with the airline’s handling of your case.

GACA says passengers should first submit the complaint to the airline, then escalate to GACA if the airline does not respond within 7 days or if the passenger objects to the proposed solution.
- Keep the airline complaint reference number.
- Keep the flight number, route, ticket number, booking reference, and incident date.
- Submit your complaint within 60 days of the incident.
- Ask the airline and GACA to confirm whether the disruption is treated as force majeure or a safety/security case.
Under GACA rules, airlines must provide care during denied boarding, cancellations, and delays: refreshments from the first hour, a suitable meal if the delay exceeds 3 hours, and hotel accommodation plus airport transport if the delay exceeds 6 hours.
Delay compensation is listed in Special Drawing Rights: 50 SDR for total flight delays of 3 to 6 hours and 150 SDR for delays over 6 hours. Airlines may be exempt from some compensation in force-majeure cases approved by GACA, which can apply during security-related disruptions.
Immigration and Visas: If Your Stay Is Nearing Its Limit
If your visa, entry permission, iqama, or permitted stay is near expiry, contact Jawazat before attempting to leave. Do not assume an airline rebooking automatically protects you from immigration issues.

Your Embassy or Consulate: For Nationality-Specific Support
Check in with your country’s embassy or consulate in Saudi Arabia if you are stranded, have a passport problem, need emergency travel documents, or are worried about your legal status.
- Register your location through your government’s official traveller-registration system, if available.
- Ask whether your nationality has special exit, transit, or emergency-document rules.
- Ask for crisis alerts and local safety instructions.
- Do not rely on your embassy to rebook commercial tickets unless your government has announced a specific assisted-departure process.

Travel Insurance: Claim Immediately
If you have travel insurance, call the assistance hotline as soon as the disruption happens. Do not wait until you return home.
- Ask whether delays, missed connections, accommodation, meals, and transport are covered.
- Ask whether war, armed conflict, terrorism, civil unrest, or travel against government advice is excluded.
- Ask what proof they need from the airline and what spending limits apply.
- Keep itemized receipts and photograph each one as a backup.
Regional Flight Status
Saudi Arabia’s main airspace remains open, with no nationwide flight ban. It is one of the main routes airlines are using to avoid the wider regional conflict zone.
However, renewed US–Iran tensions and Houthi missile and drone attacks in the south have forced repeated closures of southern airports and widespread cancellations. Always check before you travel.

- Allow extra time for rerouting, queueing, and security checks.
- If you are already at the airport, stay near official airline or airport counters rather than relying on unofficial WhatsApp forwards.
- If local authorities issue a shelter or movement instruction, follow it before trying to reach the airport.
