Round of 16
The Round of 16 runs July 4 to 7 in host-city dates. Four teams have gone out so far, and this table will grow as the remaining ties are played.

How teams get eliminated in the 48-team format
The expanded format makes early elimination harder than ever. From 12 groups of four, the top two in each group plus the eight best third-place finishers advance to the Round of 32.
That means 32 of the 48 teams move on, and only 16 go home after the group stage. Finishing third is not an automatic exit: only the four worst third-place teams are knocked out. This year the four eliminated third-place sides were South Korea, Scotland, Iran, and Uruguay, while the other eight third-place finishers advanced. Uruguay are the cautionary tale, eliminated in third place in Group H because two points was not enough to stay among the best third-place sides.
Once the Round of 32 begins, elimination becomes simple: every tie is a single match, and the loser goes home. South Africa were the first out, falling 1-0 to Canada in the opening knockout game.
Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands followed on June 29, with Germany and the Netherlands losing penalty shootouts. Ivory Coast, Sweden, and Ecuador went out on June 30, beaten by Norway, France, and Mexico.
DR Congo, Senegal, and Bosnia and Herzegovina exited on July 1, losing to England, Belgium, and the USA. Austria, Croatia, and Algeria followed on July 2, beaten by Spain, Portugal, and Switzerland. The last three Round of 32 ties were settled on July 3, sending Australia, Cape Verde, and Ghana home. The Round of 16 then opened on July 4, with Canada losing 3-0 to Morocco and Paraguay losing 1-0 to France, before Norway knocked out Brazil 2-1 on July 5.
The new tiebreaker rule for 2026
FIFA changed a key rule for 2026. When teams finish level on points, head-to-head record, not goal difference, is now the primary tiebreaker, the first time this has been used at a World Cup.
Turkey, though, were undone by results rather than any tiebreaker: back-to-back losses to Australia and Paraguay left them unable to climb out of fourth. A team can still lose two matches and survive on third-place math, but consecutive defeats usually end the run.
