How the World Cup 2026 knockout stage works
Thirty-two of the 48 teams reached the knockouts: the top two from each of the 12 groups plus the eight best third-placed teams. This is the first World Cup with an added Round of 32 before the Round of 16.
Every knockout tie is single-elimination. If the score is level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time is played, and a penalty shootout decides the match if it is still tied.
