This does not mean travel is low risk. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) continues to classify all Syrian airspace as high risk, while the UK and US governments advise against travel to Syria.
Syria Airspace Status
Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport reopened the southern air corridors and resumed operations at Damascus International Airport on 8 June 2026 after a temporary precautionary closure. The authority said the decision followed a security assessment.
That operational decision is separate from international air-safety warnings. EASA bulletin CZIB-2017-03R19 remains active and advises EASA and EASA-authorised operators not to use the Damascus Flight Information Region at any altitude. The bulletin is valid until 31 October 2026 unless reviewed earlier.

Damascus and Aleppo Airport Status
Damascus International Airport (DAM)
Damascus International Airport is handling scheduled international flights. On 15 July, the airport received the first reinstated Kuwait Airways service from Kuwait. Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian and flydubai had also restored Damascus services in recent months.

Aleppo International Airport (ALP)
Aleppo International Airport is also operating some international flights, according to the UK government’s current Syria travel advice. Syria’s civil aviation authority reported in July that a regular Jazeera Airways service had begun between Kuwait and Aleppo.

Other Syrian Airports
The UK government says other Syrian airports remain closed. Do not assume that rehabilitation work or a reopening announcement means commercial passenger flights have started; wait for confirmation from the airport or operating airline.

Is It Safe to Travel to Syria?
Operating flights do not indicate that the wider security situation is safe. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advises against all travel to Syria because of unpredictable security conditions and the threat of terrorist attacks. It also says British consular support is not available from within Syria.
The US State Department lists Syria at Level 4: Do Not Travel, citing terrorism, unrest, kidnapping or hostage-taking, crime and armed conflict. US Embassy operations in Damascus remain suspended.
Travel insurance may not cover a journey made against government advice. Read the policy wording and obtain written confirmation from the insurer rather than assuming that a standard policy applies.
