Following the FIFA Council’s decision in December 2022 to introduce a global women’s club competition, it was announced on 15 May 2024 in a press release that the inaugural edition of the FIFA Women’s Club World Cup will be held in 2026, Wego reports. The competition will be contested within 16 teams in January- February 2026.
In the press release, the world governing body FIFA said that the decision to launch this new venture was made after extensive consultation with confederations and other stakeholders. Furthermore, it was announced that this tournament will be held once every four years.
Additionally, The FIFA Council approved a 2026-2029 international match calendar, reducing breaks from six to five to give players more rest, manage workload, and enhance competition quality.
To support women’s club development and increase yearly playing opportunities, an additional FIFA women’s club competition will be organised in non-World Cup years starting in 2027.
