Japan Visa for Dubai & UAE Residents: Requirements, Fees and How to Apply in 2026

UAE residents need a visa to visit Japan. UAE nationals can enter visa-free for up to 90 days.

Here is what you need to apply from Dubai or Abu Dhabi — visa types, documents, fees, and step-by-step process.

Do You Need a Visa?

UAE nationals (Emirati passport holders) do not need a visa for short visits to Japan. Since 1 July 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan extended the visa-free stay from 30 days to 90 days.

To qualify, you must hold an ICAO-compliant ePassport (the one with the chip symbol on the cover). If your Emirati passport is not an ePassport, you will need to apply for a visa.

Your visit must be for tourism, business meetings, or visiting friends and family. Paid work is not permitted under the visa-free arrangement.

What About Expat Residents?

If you hold an Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, or other non-exempt passport and live in the UAE, you need a visa. Since 1 August 2024, all applications (including eVisa) are submitted through VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

Types of Visa Available

Tourist eVisa (Single Entry)

The Japan eVisa is available to foreign nationals residing in the UAE who need a visa for short-term tourism (excluding those already exempt from visa requirements).

For UAE residents, eVisa applications are submitted in person at the Japan Visa Application Centre in Dubai (run by VFS Global), either by yourself or through an authorised representative. The visa is then issued and recorded electronically — no passport sticker is placed. At the airport, you display a “Visa Issuance Notice” on your smartphone or tablet.

The eVisa is valid for three months from the date of issue. It allows a single entry for a stay of up to 90 days for tourism only. Use Wego’s flight tracker to monitor your flight status.

Tourist Sticker Visa (Single or Multiple Entry)

If you prefer a physical visa stamp in your passport, or if you need multiple entries, apply for a sticker visa through VFS Global.

Single-entry sticker visas allow stays of up to 90 days. The Consulate General of Japan in Dubai decides the duration and entry type granted.

Business Visa

For conferences, meetings, market research, or cultural exchanges. Available as single or multiple entry. Indian nationals have a separate multiple-entry category for business and cultural figures.

Visiting Relatives or Acquaintances

If you are visiting family or friends living in Japan, this visa requires an invitation letter and a written pledge from your host. Available as single or multiple entry for stays of up to 90 days.

Long-Stay Visa (Work, Study, or Residence)

For employment, study, or stays exceeding 90 days. You need a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) issued by Japan’s Ministry of Justice. Your employer, school, or sponsor in Japan must apply for the COE first. While you wait, compare hotels in Tokyo or Osaka on Wego.

Valid passport with at least six months’ validity

In addition to the core documents:

Invitation letter from your host in Japan (in English or Japanese)

For the Long-Stay Visa

Photo Specifications

Japan has strict photo requirements. Your photo must be:

45mm x 35mm (not the US or Schengen size)
Colour, with a plain white background
Taken within the last six months
Looking straight ahead, face clearly visible
Printed on non-textured paper

The consulate may reject your application if the photo does not meet these specifications.

How to Apply

There are two application routes depending on whether you choose the eVisa or the sticker visa through VFS Global.

eVisa (via VFS Global)

Download and complete the visa application form
Book an appointment at the Dubai or Abu Dhabi centre
Submit your application and documents in person at the Japan Visa Application Centre, or send through an authorised representative
Pay the visa fee and VFS service fee at the centre
Once approved, you receive a “Visa Issuance Notice” to display electronically — no passport sticker is placed

You must display the Visa Issuance Notice on a device (smartphone or tablet) with an internet connection at the airport. Screenshots and printed copies are not accepted.

VFS Global (In-Person)

Check the VFS Global website for the document checklist matching your visa type
Download and fill out the visa application form
Book an appointment at the Dubai or Abu Dhabi centre
Visit the centre in person with your completed form and all original documents
Pay the visa fee and VFS service fee at the centre
Track your application via email updates, SMS, or the online tracking tool
Collect your passport from the centre, or opt for courier delivery

Which Centre Should You Use?

If you hold a residence visa issued in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, or Fujairah, apply at the Dubai VFS centre. If your residence visa is from Abu Dhabi (including Al Ain), apply at the Abu Dhabi centre.

Important: Applications are only accepted up to 90 days before your planned entry date. Submissions beyond this window will not be processed.

A VFS service fee of AED 110 (including 5% VAT) applies on top of the visa fee for all in-person applications at the Dubai or Abu Dhabi centres. Citizens of gratis countries pay no visa fee but still pay the VFS service fee.

Payment can be made by cash or credit card at the VFS centre.

Processing Time

Standard processing takes 8 to 10 working days from the date VFS receives your complete application. Weekends and Japanese embassy holidays are excluded.

If documents are incomplete or additional checks are needed, processing may extend to 3 to 4 weeks.

VFS Centre Hours

Application submission: 09:00 to 15:00, Monday to Friday

Passport and visa collection: 15:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday

What If Your Application Is Rejected?

The Consulate General of Japan does not disclose the specific reason for visa rejections. This is standard Japanese consular policy.

Common Reasons for Rejection

Incomplete or incorrect documents — missing bank statements, unsigned forms, or outdated Emirates ID copies
Photo not meeting specifications — wrong size, textured paper, or older than six months
Insufficient financial proof — bank balance too low or no salary certificate
Wrong jurisdiction — applying at the Dubai centre when your residence visa is from Abu Dhabi, or vice versa
Expired UAE residence visa — your residence visa must be valid on your return date from Japan
Vague or missing itinerary — Japan requires a detailed day-by-day travel plan

Can You Reapply?

Yes, there is no formal waiting period. You can fix the issues and resubmit a new application immediately. However, repeated rejections without addressing the underlying problem may hurt future applications.

For eVisa applicants, note that uploading additional documents after submission may cancel your application. You would then need to start the process from scratch.

Tips for a Smooth Application

Apply early. Book your VFS appointment at least three weeks before your intended travel date to account for potential delays
Check your jurisdiction. Dubai residents apply in Dubai; Abu Dhabi residents (including Al Ain) apply in Abu Dhabi. Applying at the wrong centre will get your application rejected
Prepare a detailed itinerary. Japan takes itineraries seriously. List each day: city, hotel, and planned activities
Bring originals and copies. VFS requires original documents for verification. Bring photocopies as well
Check VFS holiday closures. The centres close on Japanese embassy holidays, which differ from UAE public holidays. Check the VFS website before booking
For eVisa: use a device with internet at the airport. Your Visa Issuance Notice must be displayed live. Offline screenshots will not be accepted at immigration
Keep your UAE residence visa valid. It must remain valid through your return date from Japan. An expired residence visa is a guaranteed rejection
Compare flights before booking. Search for the best deals on flights to Narita, Kansai, or Nagoya on Wego before your visa appointment

Frequently Asked Questions

Can UAE nationals visit Japan without a visa?

Yes. Since 1 July 2025, UAE nationals with an ICAO-compliant ePassport can visit Japan visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism, business, or visiting friends and family.

Is the ERFS certificate still required?

No. Japan abolished the ERFS (Entrants, Returnees Follow-up System) in October 2022. You no longer need this certificate for any type of visa application.

What is the difference between the eVisa and the sticker visa?

Both are applied for through VFS Global in the UAE. The eVisa is issued electronically and displayed on your device at immigration — no passport sticker is placed. The sticker visa is a physical visa stamped in your passport. The eVisa is only for single-entry tourism; if you need multiple entries or a non-tourism visa, you must apply for a sticker visa.

Can I apply for a Japan visa at the Japanese Consulate directly?

No. Since August 2024, the Consulate General of Japan in Dubai no longer accepts direct visa applications (except diplomatic and official passports). All applications go through VFS Global or the Japan eVisa website.
