The month of Ramadan is considered the holiest and most sacred month of the Islamic Hijri (lunar) calendar. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims are required to elevate their level of spiritual and physical submission to God by way of fasting; that is to say, Muslims must abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and also husband-wife intimacy from the breaking of dawn until the setting of the sun.

In Oman, businesses and government offices usually operate reduced working hours during Ramadan to accommodate the spiritual practices of Muslims. As we prepare to welcome the holiest of months, here are the updated working hours for Ramadan 2024 in Oman.

The official working hours for civil state units are set to run from 9 AM until 2 PM. However, in the previous year, the head of each unit had the authority to determine the most suitable attendance and departure hours for the unit based on a prearranged working hour scheme. The flexible working hours that are available include:

  • Between 7AM and 12PM
  • Between 8AM and 1PM
  • Between 9AM and 2PM
  • Between 10AM and 3PM

The Ministry of Labour has instructed that employees whose work nature permits it should work remotely, as long as it doesn’t negatively impact the workflow within the unit. However, the Ministry emphasizes that the number of employees who must attend in person should not be decreased.

Regarding businesses in the private sector, Muslim employees will have their daily work hours reduced to six hours, and they will not be allowed to work for more than 30 hours per week.

These adjusted timings aim to facilitate worship, family time, and personal obligations while maintaining the normal functioning of essential services. The exact working hour adjustments have varied from year to year. As we get closer to Ramadan, we will provide timely updates on Oman’s official working hours, enabling everyone to make the most of this special month.
