Dubai and Chennai are two dynamic cities that have always attracted tourists and business-seekers, with hundreds of Emiratis and Indians flying between the two cities frequently. The ongoing pandemic and travel ban have left travellers worrying about flight schedules and entry requirements. However, several flights are now easily available if you are looking to travel to Chennai from Dubai right now.

Chennai entry regulations from Dubai

All passengers travelling to Tamil Nadu shall be required to register on the State website and obtain TN e-pass. Generate e-Pass here.

Only the following categories of travellers can currently fly from Dubai to Chennai:

  • Indian nationals or nationals of Nepal or Bhutan stranded in UAE or any country in South America or Africa
  • All Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders and Person of Indian Origin (PIO) cardholders holding passports of any country
  • UAE nationals and foreign nationals (from any country in South America or Africa only) intending to visit India for any purpose (including their dependents on the appropriate category of dependent visa) except those on Tourist Visa

Passengers traveling on flights from India to UAE should be destined for UAE or any country in South America or Africa only. Similarly, only passengers originating from UAE or any country in South America or Africa should be allowed to travel on flights from UAE to India. 

Testing and quarantine requirements

Passengers need to take a COVID-19 RT-PCR within 72 hours prior to departure.

Before travelling to India, they must upload the following documents on the Air Suvidha Portal:

  • a self-health declaration form
  • the negative test certificate, and
  • declaration with respect to the authenticity of the report and to abide by the decision of the government authority to undergo home quarantine/self-health monitoring for 14 days or as warranted

Exemption from the RT-PCR testing is granted only in cases of death in the family and must be applied for at least 72 hours before departure on the portal. The exemption approval will have to be presented to the health authorities upon arrival.

All customers shall be required to present online SDF/RT-PCR approval to the health authorities upon arrival and undergo home quarantine/self-health monitoring for 14 days. 

 

Current flights status and schedules

Emirates

Due to the travel ban imposed by the UAE on passenger flights from India till July 6, Emirates flights between Chennai and Dubai are currently unavailable. Emirates is now awaiting the latest travel protocols and relevant permits from the government authorities before resuming flights between Dubai and India from July 7

Once the travel ban is lifted, Emirates offers upto 2 direct flights from Dubai to Chennai, 7 days a week. The flights are around 4 hours long.

  • Economy: starting at AED 750
  • Business-class: AED 2150
  • First-class: AED 6240

Air India

The flag carrier of India is currently operating Vande Bharat Flights between the UAE and India under a travel bubble arrangement. You can fly on a VBM only if you fall into the below categories:

  • Indian nationals or nationals of Nepal or Bhutan stranded in UAE or any country in South America or Africa
  • All Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders and Person of Indian Origin (PIO) cardholders holding passports of any country
  • UAE nationals and foreign nationals (from any country in South America or Africa only) intending to visit India for any purpose (including their dependents on the appropriate category of dependent visa) except those on Tourist Visa.

On an average, Air India flies 4 flights from Dubai to Chennai on a weekly basis. Direct, 4-hour flights, as well as connecting flights with several hours of layover are available.

The fare of Dubai-Chennai flights of India’s national airline varies according to the day of the flight. Economy tickets start at AED 400 but can go up to AED 1000, so try to be flexible with your dates of travel.

Non-stop flights are cheaper compared to connecting routes.

Indigo

Indigo has at least one flight a day from Dubai to Chennai, 7 days a week. However, most of them are connecting flights with inconveniently long layovers in other Indian cities like Bangalore, Kochi, and Lucknow. Meanwhile, direct, 3-hour flights are limited, available only once a week.

Connecting flights will cost you around AED 750-950. Direct flights are available in two fare types: Saver, priced at AED 495, and Flexi Plus, priced at AED 525.

Indigo doesn’t offer Business or First class services.

What to expect on arrival?

Chennai has been registering the most cases in the state of Tamil Nadu, registering over hundreds of thousands of cases to date.

The entire state is slowly reopening establishments and services after several weeks of strict lockdown. Despite the lockdown getting extended till July 5 region-wise relaxations have been announced based on the infection spread.

Essential services operate till 7 PM throughout the week, whereas non-essentials work till 5 PM. Restaurants are providing takeaway and home delivery as usual. Shopping malls have also reopened. Theatres and multiplexes remain closed. Public buses, trains and metro are operating at 50% capacity. Beaches are now open for morning walkers.
