Grand Egyptian Museum collections

The museum will showcase more than 100,000 treasures and artifacts related to ancient Egyptian civilization, with many fascinating items that are sure to capture your attention. Here are just a few examples:

For 50 years, the enormous 3,200-year-old statue of Ramses II stood motionless in the midst of a traffic circle, surrounded by a tangle of city boulevards and overpasses, amid rattling buses and honking vehicles. Due to concerns that car emissions were damaging the old red granite monument, the Egyptian authorities relocated it to Giza in 2006, with plans to eventually place it at the entrance of the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Tutankhamun collection

The GEM’s main attraction will be the first-ever complete presentation of the entire Tutankhamun collection. This includes all 5,000 artifacts that were discovered in the young king’s tomb by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922. While one-third of these objects have previously been exhibited at the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, Cairo, the GEM plans to showcase them in an exceptionally authentic manner, providing visitors with a chance to experience the inside of the actual tomb just as it was.
