Portugal visa-free countries list 2024

Third-country nationals are required to hold a long-stay visa to enter and stay in Portugal for over 90 days. The following citizens are exempt from that obligation:

  • European Union Member State citizen
  • state party to the European Economic Area Agreement, or a country with whom the EU has signed freedom of movement agreements
  • family members of Portuguese citizens or foreign nationals included above

Citizens of the following countries can visit Portugal for up to 90 days without a visa. However, please note the following requirements when entering Portugal without a visa:

  • you may need to show proof of financial resources at the port of entry to sustain your stay
  • you may be asked to provide proof of a return flight ticket to ensure departure within the permitted visa-free stay of three months
  • if visiting a friend or relative or if more funds are needed to finance the trip, a letter of invitation or guarantee may be required

Visa-free entry passport requirements for Portugal

The following are special passport requirements for visa-free entry into Portugal. If you are a citizen of any of the listed countries or regions, please take note of these requirements to ensure a smooth entry into Portugal.

  • holders of passports issued by Taiwan are eligible for visa-free entry only if their passport contains an identity card number
  • visa-free entry applies only to holders of a “Hong Kong Special Administrative Region” passport
  • visa-free entry applies only to holders of a “Região Administrativa Especial de Macau” passport
