What is the World Aquatics Championships?

The World Aquatics Championships gather athletes from around the world to compete in the world championships for six different disciplines of aquatic sports, including swimming, diving, high diving, open water swimming, artistic swimming, and water polo.

The championships are organized by World Aquatics, previously recognized as FINA (Fédération internationale de natation). This international federation is acknowledged by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the governing body for supervising international competitions in water sports.

The preceding World Aquatics Championships event took place in Fukuoka, Japan, in 2023, and the upcoming 2024 event is scheduled to be held in Doha, Qatar, highlighting the world’s aquatic talents.

The World Aquatics Championships 2024 will take place in Qatar’s capital, Doha, from Friday, 2 February to Sunday, 18 February 2024.

World Aquatics Championships 2024 events

The World Aquatics Championships will showcase a dynamic array of aquatic events involving over 2,600 elite athletes representing 190 nations across six diverse disciplines:

Swimming

The swimming competitions, initiated in 1973, encompass six different race lengths spanning from 50m to 1500m. These races span nine distinct styles, including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, individual medley, freestyle relay, medley relay, mixed freestyle relay, and mixed medley relay.

Diving

Diving competitions have been integral since the championship’s inception. They include separate events for men and women and mixed-gender competitions.

Artistic Swimming

Artistic Swimming, also known as synchronised swimming, involves swimmers performing synchronised, choreographed routines set to music. The event includes solo performances (including men’s solo), duets (mixed pairs), team events (open to both men and women), and acrobatic routines (open to both men and women).

Water Polo

This engaging sport draws significant crowds, featuring separate competitions for men and women, with two teams of seven players battling to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team’s goal.

Open Water Swimming

Held in outdoor bodies of water like oceans, lakes, and rivers, open water swimming includes specific competitions such as the 5 km, 10 km, and Mixed Relay events.

High Diving

A crowd favourite, high diving involves athletes plunging from elevated boards into the water below. Men compete from a height of 27m, while women compete from 20m.

You can now acquire tickets for the World Aquatics Championships 2024 from the World Aquatics Championships official website. The ticket sales period has already kicked off, starting 25 October 2023, and will continue until 18 February 2024.

  • tickets are allocated based on the purchased category.
  • seating positions within selected categories are assigned in no particular order for the reserved number of seats, following a first-come, first-served basis.
