His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, along with his son H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Dubai Crown Prince and Executive Council Chairman, and Mattar Al Tayer, the Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), have witnessed the signing of an agreement that aims to launch aerial taxi services in Dubai by 2026, Wego reports.

The agreement was signed by the RTA prior to the World Governments Summit, in collaboration with the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA), Joby Aviation – a global frontrunner in the development of aerial taxis, and Skyports Infrastructure – a top-tier provider of vertiport infrastructure for the Advanced Air Mobility industry.

This initiative positions Dubai at the forefront of the world’s first commercial electric aerial taxi service and vertiport network, thereby improving urban transportation. The aerial taxi project is one of RTA’s progressive mobility initiatives and is designed to offer efficient transportation services to both residents and tourists.

The Joby Aviation S4 Aerial taxi, which can carry four passengers and a pilot, ensures safe and quick travel within urban areas. It is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including vertical take-off and landing capabilities, and can travel up to 161 km at a top speed of 321 km per hour, all while producing less noise than helicopters.

This innovative partnership is a global first, bringing together government entities, aircraft manufacturers, and vertiport operators. As per the agreement, RTA will manage advanced air mobility services, Joby will offer aerial ridesharing, and Skyports will develop vertiport infrastructure. This initiative demonstrates Dubai’s dedication to adopting future transportation technologies, improving citywide connectivity, and providing passengers with a seamless travel experience.
