The visa permits digital nomads to apply for a temporary-stay visa of up to one year or a residency permit that can be renewed for up to five years.

What is the Portugal digital nomad visa?
The Portugal digital nomad visa, or the D8 visa, is a special visa program designed for digital nomads who want to live and work in Portugal. Digital nomads are individuals who can work remotely from anywhere in the world, and the Portugal digital nomad visa allows them to live and work in Portugal for a specified period of time.
While there are a number of Portugal visa types granting temporary residence within the country, the Temporary-Stay Visa is the one that specifically targets digital nomads. The Portugal digital nomad visa allows holders to stay in Portugal for up to one year and does not provide a path to citizenship.

Portugal digital nomad visa requirements
To apply for the Portugal digital nomad visa, you must be able to provide the following documents:
- fill out the official form
- passport or another travel document, valid for an additional 3 months following the duration of the intended stay
- two identical passport photographs, up-to-date and in good condition, allowing proper identification
- transport document (return ticket);
- document certifying the third-country national is in a regular situation when the applicant is from a different nationality than that of the country where the visa is being requested;
- valid travel insurance covering necessary medical expenses, including emergency assistance and repatriation;
- form authorizing access to Portuguese criminal records by the Immigration and Border Services (SEF);
- criminal record from the country of origin or country of residency for over one year (minors under 16 years of age are exempt from producing any criminal record-related document);
- proof of accommodation
- proof of means of subsistence, as stipulated by law
- proof of subsistence means can be made through a statement of responsibility signed by a Portuguese national or a foreign national legally resident in Portugal.
Portugal digital nomad visa income requirements
The income requirement for the Portugal digital nomad visa is EUR 3,040 per month. You must also be able to demonstrate that you are not from EU or EEA countries and can maintain your remote job arrangement or opportunity while living in Portugal.
Portugal digital nomad visa cost
You can expect to pay around EUR 180 for your initial visa application and a further EUR 320 for your initial residence permit once in Portugal.

Applying for the Portugal digital nomad visa can only be done by arranging an appointment with the Portuguese consulate in your home country.
If you are already in Portugal, you need to visit the Portuguese Immigration and Border Services (SEF) office. The application process is relatively straightforward whether you apply in your home country or at SEF. It usually takes about 3-4 months for your application to be processed.

As a holder of the digital nomad visa, you can apply for the Non-Habitual Resident tax regime (NHR). By applying to the NHR, you do not have to pay personal income tax that can reach up to 48% for ordinary residents. However, you still need to pay tax for the high-value-added activities at a 20% rate under the NHR regime.

- Access to schools, vocational training, and other education facilities
- Exercise of any work activity as an independent professional
- Protection from the Portuguese Law and legal system.
