Depending on your citizenship and the purpose of your visit, you may be eligible for a Turkish transit visa (essentially Türkiye e-visa), allowing you to stay in Türkiye while awaiting your next flight connection.
Read on to learn more about the transit visa requirements, fees, and application process.
Do you need Türkiye transit visa (e-visa)?
You are not required to obtain a Türkiye transit visa if you’re not planning on leaving the transit lounge at the airport.
Note that many nationalities — including citizens of the US, UK, Canada, and most EU countries — can now enter Türkiye visa-free for stays of up to 90 days and do not need an e-visa at all
Check the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa information page to confirm whether your nationality requires a visa.
Other passengers in transit or connecting flights in Türkiye with lengthy layovers may want to explore the airport’s vicinity, and multiple sources recommend travellers transiting in Istanbul to get an e-visa.

Note: Türkiye also has a separate consular transit visa (sticker visa), obtained from a Turkish embassy or consulate rather than online. As of 1 January 2026, the Turkish Presidency of Migration Management lists the sticker transit visa fees as 9,376.40 TL for a single transit and 18,813.80 TL for a double transit. Most travellers will not need this; the e-visa is the simpler and more affordable option.
